General questions
What is the Flexineb E3?
The Flexineb E3 is an equine nebulizer. The Flexineb E3 converts liquid solutions which are intended to act in the lungs into a fine mist to be inhaled by the horse.
The Flexineb E3 is silent in use, portable, flexible and comfortable, safe, and easy to use. The Flexineb E3 is available in 3 sizes to suit your horse’s needs, with multiple colours available.
Why use Flexineb E3?
The horses lungs make a fundamental contribution to the wellbeing and performance of our horses. Unfortunately, they are under constant attack from external influences..
- Environmental factors such as dust, pollen, mould, pollution and weather conditions
- Stressful situations like stabling, travelling, and competition
- Bacteria and viruses in the air
- And many more
Respiratory tract illnesses are the second leading cause of health problems in horses, surpassed only by musculoskeletal conditions. Unlike external injuries to your horse, irritations of their lungs are invisible. We often only react when the first symptoms, such as coughing, appear. Preventative measures need to be taken to avoid the development of irreversible damage to the lungs and to safeguard their health and quality of life.

What substances are suitable for nebulising with Flexineb?
What Works Well—and What Doesn’t:
✅ Works well: Water-based solutions that are thin and fully dissolved (like salt in water).
⚠️ May work: Slightly thicker liquids or mild suspensions (like sugar water with a bit of residue). Some compounded substances aren’t suitable for nebulization and may cause the cup to wear out faster.
❌ Not suitable:
- Thick or sticky substances (like syrup or honey)
- Oils (e.g., essential oils)
- Suspensions with visible particles (like sand in water)
If you're using a water-based liquid that's too thick, dilution may help. But if the liquid is oil-based, diluting won't make it suitable for use.
If you're a horse owner looking for information on appropriate substances for nebulization, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian, who can provide tailored advice based on your horse's specific respiratory condition and medical history.
Please note the following is a non-exhaustive list of substances that are not suitable for nebulizing using Flexineb: RESPRADIL, VETADINE, BROMINE, MILTON / BLEACH, COLLOIDAL SILVER, DE-IONISED WATER, IONISED WATER, SALINE & CHELATED SILVER (MIXED), IODINE.
Can I use a Metered Dose Inhaler with the Flexineb E3?
Yes, you can use Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs) with the Flexineb E3, as it comes with an MDI attachment for this purpose. Instructions on how to use the Flexineb E3 for MDI use are included in the user manual.
What is the warranty on Flexineb?
The Flexineb warranty covers various components for different periods as follows:

What is the difference between a metered dose inhaler and a nebulizer?
A metered dose inhaler (MDI) and a nebulizer, like the Flexineb, are both devices used to deliver substances to the lungs. The main differences between the two lie in their delivery method, the areas of the airways they reach, and their ease of use:
Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI):
- An MDI is a handheld device that releases a specific dose in the form of a fine aerosol spray.
- It typically requires coordination between the handler and the animal to ensure proper inhalation.
- While MDIs can deliver substances to the upper airways, reaching the lower airways requires precise technique and is often more challenging.
- Using an MDI effectively can be more difficult, especially with larger animals or those not accustomed to the device.
Nebulizer (e.g., Flexineb):
- A nebulizer is a device that converts liquids into a fine mist or aerosol that can be inhaled into the lungs.
- The nebulizer delivers a continuous aerosol mist while in operation.
- Nebulizers can effectively deliver substances to both the upper and lower airways, making them suitable for a wider range of respiratory conditions.
- Devices like Flexineb are often preferred for animals that may struggle with inhaler coordination or require the mist to reach deeper into the lower airways.
- Nebulizers are typically easier to use, as they require less technique and can stay in place while the animal inhales the aerosol, offering a more hands-free approach.
In summary, while both MDIs and nebulizers can be effective, nebulizers offer distinct advantages such as delivering substances to both the upper and lower airways and being easier to use for handlers. This makes devices like Flexineb a preferred choice, especially in veterinary settings with horses and other large animals.
Is Flexineb suitable for long-term use?
Flexineb is designed for long-term use, thanks to its durable construction and dependable performance. However, whether it’s appropriate for ongoing use in a specific case depends on factors like the horse's particular respiratory condition, the care plan in place, and any individual health considerations. It's important to consult with your veterinarian for personalized advice on long-term respiratory care. Your veterinarian can guide you on how frequently and for how long to use Flexineb, based on the animal’s needs and how they respond to the process.

Which parts of the Flexineb are consumable parts and how often do they needto be replaced?
The Flexineb E3 Cup is the only consumable part in the Flexineb system and will need periodic replacement due to wear. Over time and with use, the gold mesh inside the cup can degrade. The E3 cup is designed for an expected lifespan of up to 100 uses when used exclusively with 10ml of 0.9% saline solution. If other solutions are used, the lifespan may be reduced by up to 50%. Users who nebulize specialized or medicated substances should expect a shorter duration of effective use. It's advisable to keep a backup cup in stock. Proper cleaning of the cup after every use can help maximize its lifespan, as well as using separate cups for different substances. Other parts of the Flexineb E3 are not considered wearable and generally do not require periodic replacement unless damaged.
How should I store my Flexineb?

Flexineb E3 Cup
What is the Flexineb E3 Cup?
The Flexineb E3 Cup is the heart of the Flexineb system. It’s the part that holds the liquid and transforms it into the fine mist. This happens through a delicate, 18-carat gold-plated mesh that vibrates 90,000 times per second, creating the aerosol that your horse inhales.
The Flexineb E3 Cup works hard and contains sensitive components, therefore, it is a consumable part that naturally wears out over time and should be replaced periodically to maintain consistent performance.
How do I know which colour of Flexineb E3 Cup to use?
Choosing the right Flexineb E3 Cup colour depends on the type of liquid you’re nebulizing:
- Grey Cup – Ideal for most thin, water-like solutions. If your liquid flows easily, like salt fully dissolved in water, the grey cup is usually the best fit.
- Green Cup – Designed for slightly thicker liquids or mild suspensions. Think of a liquid with sugar partially dissolved, or something just a little thicker than water. If your solution struggles to nebulize in the grey cup—even on higher power settings—the green cup is a better choice.
- Blue Cup – Best used for small volumes of thin liquids.
Getting the Best Results:
- Start with the grey cup on power level 1.
- Increase the power only if needed—slower nebulization is often more effective.
- Avoid using the green cup with very thin solutions, as it may nebulize too quickly and cause dripping.
- Use a separate Flexineb E3 Cup for each type of substance to help extend cup life and maintain performance.
What Works Well—and What Doesn’t:
- ✅ Works well: Water-based solutions that are thin and fully dissolved (like salt in water).
- ⚠️ May work: Slightly thicker liquids or mild suspensions (like sugar water with a bit of residue).
Because the Flexineb E3 Cup includes delicate components like a vibrating mesh, it’s a consumable part and will need replacing over time to maintain proper function.
How many uses will I get from my cup before I need to replace it?
The lifespan of the Flexineb E3 Cup varies depending on the substances nebulized within it and the cleaning frequency. The cup is lined with gold-plated mesh, which can corrode over time due to certain substances. Thicker substances may also gradually clog the mesh. Using separate cups for different substances is recommended to maximize lifespan and avoid cross-contamination.
Additionally, using too high of a power level for the substances being nebulized can damage the cup.
How long should it take to nebulize 10ml of 0.9% saline solution?
For the grey-coded Flexineb E3 Cup, the nebulization process typically takes approximately 8-12 minutes to nebulize 10ml of 0.9% saline solution. Minor variations in the nebulization time for the same substance at the same volume should not be a cause for concern.
The flow rate is dependent on the substance being nebulized and the power level used. Thicker substances will require more time to nebulize. If a substance appears to be nebulizing at a slower-than-expected rate, you may consider increasing the power level. For thicker substances that still struggle at power level 3 with the grey-coded cup, switching to the green-coded cup may be necessary.
How do I know when to change my Flexineb E3 Cup?
You'll know it's time to change your Flexineb E3 Cup if, despite appropriate usage and cleaning, it suddenly stops working or performs abnormally. Signs may include substances dripping from the cup instead of aerosolizing, or decrease in performance. Visually inspect the cup for signs of wear. If you notice these signs, it's time to replace the cup. Periodically replacing the Flexineb E3 Cup is essential, so having a backup is advisable.
Flexineb E3 Controller
What do the three numbers on the left of the controller represent?
The three numbers on the left side of the controller indicate the power level. When you press the button to turn on the controller, it automatically starts at power level one. Pressing it a second time will set it to power level two, and pressing it a third time will set it to power level three
How do I decide what Power Level to use?
We recommend using the lowest power setting necessary to effectively nebulize your substance. Using a higher power level than needed can cause the substance to pass through the cup too quickly, resulting in less efficient nebulization. If you notice that the substance is dripping from the Flexineb E3 Cup, it may be that the power level you are using is too high.
For thinner substances like 0.9% saline, power level 1 is suitable when using a grey-coded cup. Higher power levels are needed only for thicker substances. Start with power level one, and only increase the power level if needed, such as if the substance struggles to nebulize.
What operating time will I get from a fully charged battery?
Operating time from a new fully charged battery is approximately 6 hours.
How do I adjust the power level on my controller?
When you press the button to turn on the controller, it automatically starts at power level one. Pressing it a second time will set it to power level two, and pressing it a third time will set it to power level three.

How do I know that the mask is fitting correctly?
To ensure that the mask is fitting correctly, follow these steps:
Check that the mask comfortably covers the horse's nose with minimal gaps between the muzzle and the mask. A tight seal should form for optimal performance.
When the Flexineb E3 is turned on, observe the aerosol holding chamber filling and emptying with each inhalation of the horse. If the chamber does not empty, the first possible cause is an improper fit of the mask. Consider using our Mask Seal Optimizer to improve the fit and seal.
If the issue persists, it may indicate that the horse is not breathing deeply enough. A gentle walk can be carried out while using the Flexineb E3 to encourage deeper breathing.
For further guidance on achieving the correct fit and troubleshooting, please refer to our size guide.
What material is the mask made from?
The mask is made from a special thermoplastic elastomer material. This material is non-porous, pliable, and durable, allowing for a comfortable fit, easy cleaning, and prolonged use. The mask does not contain any latex.
